Legitimate Work At Home Medical Transcription Jobs

If you're like so many work at home job seekers who've tried to find legitimate work at home medical transcription jobs you are not alone.

The good news is that although trying to find this type of work can be difficult, legitimate and reputable companies that hire home based medical transcriptionists do exist - you just need to know how and where to find them.

What is a Medical Transcriptionist? The U.S. Department of Labor provides the following job description:

"Medical transcriptionists listen to dictated recordings made by physicians and other health care professionals and transcribe them into medical reports, correspondence, and other administrative material. They generally listen to recordings on a headset, using a foot pedal to pause the recording when necessary, and key the text into a personal computer or word processor, editing as necessary for grammar and clarity. The documents they produce include discharge summaries, medical history and physical examination reports, operative reports, consultation reports, autopsy reports, diagnostic imaging studies, progress notes, and referral letters. Medical transcriptionists return transcribed documents to the physicians or other health care professionals who dictated them for review and signature or correction. These documents eventually become part of patients' permanent files."

Medical Transcription Education and Training

In order for a medical transcriptionist to accurately transcribe dictated reports they have to be able to understand medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, treatment assessments, medical jargon and abbreviations into their expanded forms. Therefore, most companies, whether hiring in-house or home based employees, require some related education, skill and/or training. Since certified medical transcription courses are offered by and through many vocational schools, community colleges, and distance-learning programs many home based job seekers are seeking this profession as a home based career option.

Work At Home Medical Transcription Scams

In order to protect yourself from work at home scams, simply remember that a legitimate work at home job never advertises itself as an "income opportunity". A legit employer will always require you to fill out and application and/or submit a resume but will never require you to pay them as a condition of your employment or being hired.

Don't mistake a scam with having to pay for your own education and/or job-related equipment such as a foot pedal, headset, etc... A company requiring you to pay for these things is quite legitimate and common. On the other hand, a company requiring you to pay them money for a list of companies who are known to hire medical transcriptionists is starting to lean toward a scam. Although selling you a list of companies isn't necessarily a scam, promising you employment from this list or that you'll earn thousands of dollars a day is nothing but a scam.

Find and Apply for Legitimate Work At Home Medical Transcription Jobs

Start with free work at home job and/or database sites. Applying for jobs with these companies and employers doesn't cost you a thing because they offer "jobs", not "opportunities". As such, they hire and pay you for your work.

Be sure to apply for home based employment with these companies just as you would any other traditional job. This means that you need to complete and submit accurate applications and/or resumes. The competition for home based jobs is stiff so you want to make your application and resume stand out.

After applying, wait a few days to a week or so and contact the company you've applied to. You want to let them know you are requesting the status of your application. This helps you to stand out by letting them know you are truly interested and eager to work as a home based medical transcriptionist.
