Medical Transcription E-learning

Like everything, medical transcription has also been through phases of evolution. Medical transcription is a rather dynamic industry with new experiments and additions going on everyday. The industry evolved from manual typewriters to electronic typewriters to word processor and then to plastic disks, magnetic belts and finally to digital recordings. Voice Recognition System or VRS is the recent evolution in the medical transcription industry.

VRS is used by medical transcriptionists and proof-readers in providing supplementary editorial services. There are certain cases where the VRS has completely replaced medical transcription. Earlier, medical transcription (MT) consisted of handwritten notes with lots of abbreviations and responsibilities of the physician. These notes and interpretations were then supplemented in patient’s file for reference.

The handwritten notes and typed notes are all consolidated and kept in a file along with the records of other patients for further reference. Whenever, a physician required the record of a specific patient, the patient’s file is retrieved from the huge mass of files. To enhance this process, usually two or three carbon copies of same medical record are kept in a single file.

But now things have completely changed. Huge files have given way to desktop computers that are connected with powerful servers. A patient’s record is processed and archived individually in these servers. The unique digital format allows instant access to these servers even from the remote location. Medical transcriptionists now work closely with the programmers to stream in voice and get continuous data through network interfaces.

In fact, healthcare providers now make use of personal data assistants (PDA) and other software’s for their service. The Computer Aided Medical Transcription (CAMT) is software that is exclusively designed for medical transcription industry. The CAMT has several benefits that are attributing to its popularity. Following are some of them:

Changing Medical Dictation to Text: The CAMT software change spoken words to texts. This software was especially developed for medical transcription.

An Efficient Interface for Medical Transcriptionists: Using these software’s you can easily increase your editing speed. In these software’s, editing is done as fast as keyboard stokes and shortcuts.

Interpreting and Formatting Document: CAMT perfectly understands what a physician intends to mean and transcribe accordingly. For example, the software understands when the word “next” refers to ‘3’ in the list and when the physician uses it to mean the next section.

Every year the healthcare providers spend thousands of dollars for the increased charges of the MT industry. Further, there also had been a dearth in the number of efficient medical transcriptionist. The advent of the CAMT helped the service providers in saving few dollars that they would otherwise spent for the MT industry.

The invention of CAMT has revolutionized medical transcription industry. It can now deliver high quality work within turn around time (TAT). The software is simple and easy to use. This software has brought this industry at the edge of a huge change and it’s also time for us to change our concept of medical transcription.

Voice Recognition Technology doesn’t provide right solution

We were hearing for ages now that the voice recognition technology will make
Superfluous medical transcription. However the use of the technology of voice recognition had increased it appreciably could not replace the more traditional form of medical transcription.

We were hearing for ages now that the voice recognition technology will make the transcription medical superfluous. However the use of the technology of voice recognition had increased it appreciably could not replace the more traditional form of medical transcription.

Some of the key problems associated in speech recognition are that:

• The end product is just 60%-80% accurate and would need a trained MT to review and edit the report to make it error-free
• Inter-speaker differences are often large and difficult to account for. It is not clear which characteristics of speech are speaker-independent.
• The interpretation of many phonemes, words and phrases are context sensitive. For example, phonemes are often shorter in long words than in short words. Words have different meanings in different sentences, e.g. “Philip lies” could be interpreted either as Philip being a liar, or that Philip is lying on a bed.
• Intonation and speech timbre can completely change the correct interpretation of a word or sentence, e.g. “Go!”, “Go?” and “Go.” can clearly be recognized by a human, but not so easily by a computer.
• Narrative dictation has a highly interpretive nature that often requires human judgment because words and sentences can have several valid interpretations such that the speaker leaves the choice of the correct one to the listener. Have a look at some of the words that voice recognition software have generated:
“urine” from “you’re in”
“dilate” from “die late”
“cauterize” from “caught her eyes”
“nitrate” from “night rate”
• Written language may need punctuation according to strict rules that are not strongly present in speech, and are difficult to infer without knowing the meaning (commas, ending of sentences, quotations).

The person employing the software must have the practice and the attachment, to become qualified because the use of a new software is like learning a new language. The specific verbal orders must be educated in order to order the computer, and to compose, publish, and correct the text created.

Imagine what a complete disaster it would be if such a transcription takes place! The whole system of delivery of health care would be in a chaos if incorrect patient information is provided to the doctors to make decisions of treatment.

Perhaps formerly in the future one will produce a more advanced technology of voice recognition which can treat all the exits above. Until then the companies must employ of the services of transcription, in particular where exactitude is critical. The agreed times that the voice recognition can help to improve quality of the care by a better documentation and more rapids, and saves it cost and times but the need for transcriptionists and qualified medical writers of medical report/ratio will open out well in the future. In fact, it there forever have a more favorable time to enter this field impassioning of career.

Tips for new Medical Transcriptionist

The question that to me am generally asked by new medical transcriptionists is how to obtain their first work. The majority of work of transcription requires the experiment because the medical suppliers do not have time to form transcriptionists. Thus, how do you obtain the experiment if you do not have any experience? It is the fight for beginners.

The good news is that there are companies of transcription which will engage you and will train you. The hospitals and the private clinics employ usually a company of medical transcription to make transcribing mainly because they do not have the hour or the personnel to form an inexperienced MT

If you took a medical transcription course you were probably known as to call the hospitals and the private clinics in your sector or to write a letter about obtaining to them a work. To also place advertisements in the newspaper, read the advertisements in the newspaper, and to contact the medical transcription companies to see whether they rent inexperienced MTs.

I obtained my first work of MT while answering an advertisement in the newspaper of a small company of medical transcription. I was in my last weeks of school and did not make very of course transcribe the dictation with the interview, but I was committed because I knew the medical terminology very well.

All above can function if you persist and do not give up. I recently made send a new MT about the test to me to obtain the first work to him and I said to him about all the methods above. There then I said to him to be sure and go to the forum of MT such as the office of the MT and to enquirer me of which rented for starting MTs.

It went to the office of MT and in less than two weeks it had a work. It found that outside that the companies engaged the inexperienced medical transcriptionists and the first day some application programs real-time supplemented. It had a follow-up of telephone with one of the companies later that week and the next week it was committed.

There are more transcription companies renting inexperienced MTs than there was in the past. You would not start with a very high salary scale but your construction of experiment thus your wages. The forum of the MT will know which these companies are. You also can network with other new transcriptionists and to obtain the good council of the senior professionals.

Thus obtain started today, visit the forum, put the questions and obtain with that the first work.
